A regular user of My Life Pictures
We wanted to develop pictures which would represent real life situations and be valuing to use. There are two core sets of pictures - Home Is Where the Heart Is and Get Busy Living. Home Is Where the Heart Is enables people to explore and think about things they would like to do in and around their own home and Get Busy Living invites people to consider aspects of community life. The pictures are hand drawn, full colour and are presented in an easy to use binder with plastic inserts to ensure the pictures are kept in good condition even with regular use.
The pictures are split into feeling cards and subject cards. The supporter can use the cards to enable people to express feelings, preferences, ideas and to make plans. The cards are used to listen to people and can be used to prepare for reviews or person centred planning meetings. They can also be used during meetings of self advocacy groups and other groups such as tenants, college students or groups at day centres. There is a film that comes with the cards which gives guidance on good practice in using this resource through the experiences of two people who are supported to use them. The cards can be used in conjunction with My Life Plan to enable people to express how they want to live their lives, what they are happy with and what they want to change.
The picture sets represent excellent value at £65 plus VAT for each set or £120 plus VAT for both. They make an excellent addition to the 'Person Centred Toolkit' of any environment that is committed to respecting the views of people with learning disabilities.
